Summer Leadership Conference: Destination Bermuda

SUMMER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE:  DESTINATION BERMUDA

By Anthony J. Restaino, CNHA, FACHCA

Heralded as one of the most beautiful places in the world, Bermuda does not disappoint!  A week spent in Bermuda will certainly be the highlight of your entire year! The excitement starts on the plane when you see the island in the distance.  As you get closer to Bermuda, the ocean gradually turns from a deep blue to turquoise.  From the moment you hit the ground, the experience begins.

It’s about a forty-five-minute cab ride to the Fairmont Southampton, the host hotel.  Every year the American College of Health Care Administrators holds its Annual Summer Leadership Conference the Fairmont Southampton.  The program, which is conveniently held from 8:00am – 11:00am each morning, focuses on self-development and is not limited to any particular discipline.  The attendees are Administrators, Facility Owners, Executive Directors, Nursing Executives and even a couple of industry suppliers.  The program always encourages interaction between all participants and the presenter.  This format lends itself to free, open and honest discussions.  You really do feel a sense of fulfillment when it is over.  The atmosphere is one of comfort with no dress code during the day.  Shorts, tee shirts and sandals are perfectly appropriate.

Simply put, the Fairmont Southampton is magnificent hotel.   The rooms are very spacious and comfortable.  Whether you have an ocean view or harbor view, the scenery is beautiful!  There are several dining choices available right on the property. Whether you like seafood or are a carnivore, you will leave satisfied, especially if you have one of their signature desserts. Back to the cab ride…………the first thing you notice is that in Bermuda, like any other British territory, you are driving on the left side of the road (which are very narrow).  Cars passing each other in opposite directions seem as though they are inches apart.  Therefore, mopeds, motorcycles, bicycles……………and sometimes horses are the vehicles of choice.

OK, did I mention that the seminar ends at 11:00am?  Well, it’s worth saying again.  It’s like the last day of school every day!  Some run to change into their beach wear to get the shuttle down to hotel’s private beach, where you have your choice of kayaking, snorkeling, diving or just lying in the sun. Some jump on the shuttle going the opposite direction to go to the dock to take the ferry across to Hamilton. You can then go through town and tour the many historical buildings and little shops.   If shopping and sightseeing isn’t your thing, you can stay at the Fairmont dock and rent jet skis, power boats, kayaks or charter a fishing boat.  Virtually any water sport is available.

For me, playing golf was the afternoon activity for the majority of the days.  The Fairmont Southampton has its own 18 Hole Par 3 course.  Winner of Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play Golf”, this course is as challenging as any regulation course.  Plus, the ocean views are absolutely breathtaking!  On this course, a camera is just as important as a putter!  The best part is that you can play the entire course in around three hours. After golf, you can go to the pool, relax in your room, or do anything else your heart desires.  Dinner is quite an experience inBermuda.  Some of the finest restaurants on the island area are located either on the hotel’s property or a short cab ride away.  The dress code is mostly casual with slacks and a collared shirt being acceptable.  A couple of restaurants require men to wear jackets.  After dinner, it’s back to the hotel for a night cap in the Jasmine Lounge.

The next day you get to do it all over again.

This year’s program will be held from July 22nd through July 26th 2019.  As always, our program will take place at the Fairmont Southampton.  The room rates for this week are amazingly low.  Rooms typically cost approximately $600 - $700 per night during the summer months.  However, our group rates are $322 per night!  You will not find these rates at any other tropical vacation spot!

This year’s program, The Strong Leader Workshop, 5 Days to Strengthen Your Ability to Lead! will be presented by Dr. Bryan K. Williams.

This program is one that you do not want to miss!  Any questions can be directed to Larry Slatky at lislatky@cs.com.
