DOH: Candida auris Webinar – May 11, 2017

Nancy Leveille and Stephen B. Hanse

On May 9, 2017 Stephen Hanse, President/CEO and Nancy Leveille, Executive Director, Foundation for Quality Care, were invited and participated in a panel discussion on Candida auris with Dr. Howard Zucker, NYSDOH Commissioner of Health. The DOH is seeking assistance from health care providers to prevent the spread of Candida auris in skilled nursing facilities, hospitals and the community. It is showing resistance to the three main medications used to resolve the illness.

Candida auris infection is predominately being seen in New York City, but a couple cases were noted in Westchester and Rochester. Candida auris can remain active and potentially spread to others for months. Therefore, the use of contact and standard procedures, private rooms and cohosting patients and environmental cleaning are essential components of preventing the spread.

The Commissioner is requiring all skilled nursing facility and hospital clinical staff to listen to the May 11, 2017 webinar at 12:00 – 1:00 pm and 3:00 – 4:00 pm for specific information. They will also develop additional information to be shared via webinar on their website, www.health.ny.gov.

Attached is information to register for the May 11th webinars.

NYSHFA will alert members with continuing updated information.
