NYS Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators (BENHA) Update

Nancy Leveille and Lisa Volk in Clinical & Quality

DOH sent out this notice last week for LNHA candidates preparing to test for their licensure exam.

Dear Nursing Home Administrator Licensing Examination Candidate:

On July 1, 2017, the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) will transition its examinations to a new structure. The existing Nursing Home Administrator Licensing Examination will change to a two-part component examination model. Candidates will need to pass a 100-item Core of Knowledge examination and a 50-item Line of Service examination. There will be a brief "blackout" period during this transition in which no NAB examinations will be administered. As a current examination candidate, you must either plan to take the examination in its current form by June 17, 2017 or prepare to take the new examination form after July 1, 2017. The last day to apply for the current Nursing Home Administrator Licensing Examination is June 1, 2017.

The application approval letter that you previously received states that you will remain eligible to sit for the examination for five years from the date of the approval and that you may sit for a maximum of three examinations during this period. With NAB’s transition to the new examination format, you will be eligible to sit for four examinations during the five-year period of eligibility. If you do not receive a passing score on the examination by your fourth attempt, and you wish to retake the examination after a period of at least one year, but not longer than five years from the date of approval of your application, you will be required to reapply and requalify under the (then) current laws, rules and regulations.

Please visit the NAB website http://www.nabweb.org/ for more information to help guide the timing of your examination(s).

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the New York State Department of Health’s Bureau of Professional Credentialing at profcred@health.ny.gov or 1-877-877-1827.
