In Memoriam – Austin Barrett, Past President, Board of Directors of the Association

It is with sadness that we have learned of the passing of Austin J. Barrett, who served as President of the Association in 1961 and 1962. Mr. Barrett was very active in the Association in its early years.

He served on the NYSHFA Board from 1959 to 1962. At the national level, Mr. Barrett served on the ANHA (former name of AHCA) Board of Governors from 1961 to 1963. He was President of District 10 in 1960 and prior to that had served as District Secretary and Treasurer.

Mr. Barrett was appointed by the NYS Commissioner of Welfare in 1964 to serve on the Committee to revise rules and regulations governing nursing homes in New York State.

He owned the Barrett Nursing Home in the Buffalo New York area and was the Administrator of Nazareth Nursing Home in Buffalo. He was a nursing home administrator for 46 years and a WWII Veteran.

Mr. Barrett was 96. He was the husband of Maureen (nee Spellman) Barrett. His grandson, Kevin Kennedy, currently serves as the administrator at Absolut Center for Nursing and Rehab at Salamanca.

Family will be present on Thursday from 5-8 PM at the (Tonawanda Chapel) AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 2600 Sheridan Dr., (corner of Parker Blvd.), where prayers will be offered on Friday at 10:45 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated from St. Amelia Church at 11:30 AM.
