CMS Issues New S&C Memos

Karen Morris and Nancy Leveille in Clinical & Quality

AHCA sent out a notice this week noting that CMS issued three Survey & Certification (S&C) Memoranda related to:

  • State Consumer Oriented Websites
  • 2015 Nursing Home Data Compendium
  • Surveyor guidance revisions to psychosocial harm in nursing homes

The last S&C has new information related to Guidance to Surveyors that CMS has revised on defining psychological harm. It refers back to medication management in this guidance. Take a close look at Part IV, Appendix P for specific information of the criteria they will evaluate. An example of potential psychological harm could include the following: Failure to respond appropriately to an INR level that is below, the target range for treatment of atrial fibrillation, prevention of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary emboli, or other documented indication and failure to re-evaluate continuation of an antipsychotic originally prescribed for acute delirium which resulted insignificant side effects from the medication…

NYS has had a website for years that follows the guidelines set in the first S&C. The 2015 Nursing Home Compendium has a wealth of data about all the states from 2010-2014 related to resident/facility demographic information to Quality Measures and survey outcome data.

See attached notice from AHCA that also contains the 3 CMS S&C memorandums.
