Life Safety Code: Electric Fireplaces

Nancy Leveille in Clinical & Quality

At our Fall Conference, the question came up about the ability to have electric fireplaces in SNF. Dave Hood, Principal, Russell Phillips Associates, LLC, looked into this issue and spoke with NYSDOH. The following is needed for life safety compliance:

Electric Fireplaces (units you can plug in) are being viewed as portable space heaters. Therefore, they are not permitted in resident areas. If they are going to be used in other areas, they need to meet the requirements of the Life Safety Code which means the heating elements cannot exceed 212 degrees F in temperature. Dave doesn’t believe the common ones that you can buy at the store meet this requirement.
