E-Prescribing Webinar Recap

Nancy Leveille in Clinical & Quality

Last Monday, August 25, 2014. NYSHFA and the other state associations held a free webinar related to E-Prescribing which was presented by Judy Barrett and Anita Murray from the DOH, Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE). Attached are the handouts and a link to the archived presentation. The following are suggestions we recommend members review to assist in implementing this new law which will be required in SNF by March 27, 2015:

  • Start discussing with your physicians, RNP and PA what they know about E-Prescribing and to determine if they have experience in their private practice with E-Prescribing
  • Identify a software product that has an approved certification from the BNE to enable E-Prescribing (www.nyhealth.gov/professionals/narcotic is the recommended webinar to assist with E-Prescribing)
  • Once your vendor is approved (has certificate of approval) the prescribers must set up authentications via the product for identification and security
  • Pharmacies must also be approved to accept E-Prescribing and have approved certification(s)
  • SNF with class 3 pharmacies are exempt except for discharge medications
  • NYS regulations can be found on slide 21

NYSHFA will continue to advocate for a number of issues still not decided related to the nurse’s role and verbal and telephone orders to ensure medications are provided to residents in a timely fashion and will continue to communicate updates as we have them.
