Dick Herrick Welcomes New Commissioner of Health

Richard J. Herrick in From the President

Dr. Howard Zucker, M.D., J.D.

Dick Herrick recently met with Dr. Howard Zucker, Acting Commissioner of the Department of Health, to welcome and introduce Dr. Zucker to the New York State Health Facilities Association and the New York State Center for Assisted Living.

This meeting was arranged by Commissioner Nirav Shah as Mr. Herrick was recently wishing him well on his new career path, and is an important step in continuing the collaborative relationship the Association has with DOH.

Dr. Zucker originally joined the State Health Department as First Deputy Commissioner of Health in September 2013. During his tenure as First Deputy Commissioner his areas of focus included DOH’s preparedness and response initiatives in natural disasters and emergencies. He also led the Department’s efforts regarding issues that affect New York City and worked closely with the NYC Department of Health and other health-related entities. Prior to this appointment he was professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.

Dr. Zucker’s appointment as Commissioner of Health is subject to Senate approval.  As Acting Commissioner, he is fully engaged in a broad range of healthcare issues
in New York State. Dr. Zucker was keenly interested in learning our thoughts and ideas regarding health care reform and new models of care.  He was particularly interested in expanding the role assisted living may play in the future.  Mr. Herrick and Dr. Zucker committed to follow-up in the near future to continue and expand
upon their discussion.

Once Dr. Zucker has time to settle into his new role, we look forward to inviting him to participate in our various events.
