Free Infection Control Training

Author: Karen Morris* Published in Clinical & Quality

The State University at Albany School of Public Health (SPH) has received funding through a grant from the NYSDOH to provide training on infection control for nursing home infection control nurses, DONs and ADONs and any nurse involved the facility’s infection control program. These educational programs have been developed as a result of the association’s input regarding the needs of the providers.

The SPH is currently seeking nursing homes or training centers who are willing to host one day regional workshops entitled  “Outbreak 101: Outbreak Investigation in a Nursing Home. For further information go to the web link on the attached flyer

On the weblink you will also be able to access two free archived webcasts “Infectious Aspects of Chronic Wounds” and “C-difficile Infections in LTC.”  We encourage you to take advantage of this free training resource.

NYC Updates Evacuation Zones

Author: Karen Morris* Published in Clinical & Quality

NYC officials today announced final updates to the City’s hurricane evacuation zones (see attached.) The new Zones, 1 through 6, which will replace Zones A, B and C, now include an additional 600,000 New Yorkers not included within the boundaries of the former zones. The new zone system – first announced in the City’s Hurricane Sandy After-Action report last month – was developed using the latest Sea, Lake, and Overland Surges from Hurricane storm surge inundation maps generated by the National Weather Service and processed by United States Army Corps of Engineers.

The Office of Emergency Management’s Ready New York Hurricane Guide, which delineates the 2013 hurricane evacuation zones and provides critical information, is also available online at The guide will be available in print and in 11 languages, and all households and businesses in a hurricane evacuation zone will receive a Hurricane Guide in the mail in late June.

New evacuation zones now include:

• The residences of 37 percent of New Yorkers;
• An additional 600,000 New Yorkers;
• An additional 26 New York City Housing Authority developments, now totaling 175;
• Four additional hospitals, bringing the total from 21 to 25; and
• Nine additional nursing homes, bringing the total from 60 to 69.

AHCA Quality Initiative Recognition Program Deadline

Author: Nancy Leveille and Karen Morris* Published in Clinical & Quality

On Monday, May 13, 2013, AHCA launched the Quality Initiative Recognition Program for skilled nursing centers which achieve one or more of the Quality Initiative goals. AHCA and NYSHFA hope to applaud the great work of our skilled nursing centers on the local and national stages.

Below is quick synopsis of the program. But you can find all the information, levels of recognition and additional details on AHCA’s website under the Quality Initiative section:

Nursing Centers
The program will be based on skilled nursing centers reaching the Quality Initiative goal targets.  Centers can be recognized for reaching one, two, three or all four goals.  AHCA will inform each state association of their members who will be recognized and hope that we will partner with us in acknowledging their achievements.

In order to participate in the recognition program, nursing centers will need to ensure they submit staff turnover data for 2011 and 2012, as well as their customer satisfaction results for 2012.  To help centers with data submission, we will have the following tools available on the website:

The deadline for these submissions is Monday, July 15, 2013.

Facilities do not have to worry about reporting the hospitalization and antipsychotic goal rates since AHCA already collects that information.

Also attached is a handout describing the recognition program to share with your staff.

State Affiliates
AHCA will also recognize one state affiliate through our “Innovation Award,” to highlight an affiliate’s unique approach to advancing the Quality Initiative among their membership
Through an online survey located on the Recognition Program’s website, state affiliates must tell about their innovative techniques to promoting the Quality Initiative in their state.  The AHCA Quality Cabinet will then select one state to recognize at the 2014 Quality Symposium.  Again, the deadline for submission is Monday, July 15, 2013.

Any inquires and questions about the recognition program, feel free to contact Sandy Fitzler: or Urvi Shah:
