Assembly Member Richard Gottfried (back, center) welcomes artist Margaret Doig (front, center) of Kingsway Arms Nursing Center in Schenectady. They are joined by Kingsway reps: Rob Doig (back, left); Mark Olsen, Administrator (back, right); Renee Markel (front left) and Carol Thompson (front, right).

Ten pieces of original artwork created by nursing home residents from across New York State will be exhibited in Assembly Member Richard Gottfried’s Albany office. Assembly Member Gottfried, who serves as Chairman of the Assembly Health Committee, plans to display the loaned artwork in the Health Committee conference room to showcase the talent of those living in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities.

The exhibit is part of the annual “Art from the Heart” program sponsored by the Foundation for Quality Care and the New York State Health Facilities Association/New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSHFA/NYSCAL). The annual program was created to shine a spotlight on the individuality, vibrant spirit and creative abilities of artists who reside in New York’s skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. In total, more than 70 pieces of artwork were submitted in this past year’s contest, with the 10 works of art featured in the exhibit selected by an independent panel of jurors. The pieces in the exhibit are also featured in a 2013 wall calendar.

“I’m delighted to have this artwork in my office,” said Assembly Member Gottfried.  “Art from the Heart’ is a great program, and hosting these pieces allows me to share them with everyone from Assembly Members to the general public.  We’ll be unveiling the display at our Health Committee meeting today.”

Contributing artist Margaret Doig, a resident of Kingsway Arms Nursing Center in Schenectady, will be in attendance at the unveiling ceremony. Her winning piece, titled “Covered Bridge” is one of the featured art works in the Exhibit.

“Some very talented New Yorkers contributed to ‘Art from the Heart,’” said Richard J. Herrick, President of the New York State Health Facilities Association and the Foundation for Quality Care.  “It’s a testimony to the power of creativity and the contributions every New Yorker can make, regardless of age or circumstance.”

“Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard Patterson, Executive Director of the Foundation for Quality Care.  “The Art from the Heart exhibit provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.”
